The Seed of Life Garden and the
Nevada County School System's Wellness Policy

"In the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, the U.S. Congress established a requirement that all school districts with a federally funded school meal program form a Wellness Committee to draft a Wellness Policy by the start of the 2006-20007 school year."

TheSeed of LifeGarden Project is proposing to the Wellness Committee that the Seed Of Life garden pattern be adopted as a tool for implementing the goals of the policy. The pattern can easily be integrated into current curriculum in diverse fields and applied to the education of students of all ages. This garden has the additional potential for flowering into an integral part of school, student, teacher, and community vitality as it catalyzes sustainable practices. It has high grant earning potential.

The pattern has already become a familiar site in our community due the collaboration of Sierra College, NCTV, the Union, the Nevada County Peace Center, the Jacobson's Dude Ranch, the Nevada County Recycling Department, the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility, Bluebird organic farm and possibly the Loma Rica Ranch organic farm.
